ESMERON®
Composition
Esmeron is available in doses of 50 mg rocuronium bromide for injection
General Description
Esmeron® is the most commonly prescribed muscle relaxant in the USA, Canada and most European countries. Esmeron acts by blocking the passage of impulses between nerves and muscles. It is a nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent with a rapid to intermediate onset depending on dose and intermediate duration. It acts by competing for cholinergic receptors at the motor end-plate. This action is antagonized by acetyl cholinesterase inhibitors, such as neostigmine and edrophonium. It is very important in enabling intricate surgery to be carried out at a light depth of anesthesia without patient movements. This allows the patient to recover more rapidly even after long and complicated operations.
Therapeutic Indications
Esmeron is indicated as an adjunct to general anesthesia to facilitate tracheal intubations during routine and rapid sequence induction, and to provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery. Esmeron is also indicated as an adjunct in the intensive care unit (ICU) to facilitate tracheal intubations and mechanical ventilation.
Contraindications
Former anaphylactic reactions to rocuronium or to the bromide ion
