OVESTIN®
Composition:
Each tablet contains Estriol 1 mg
Cream contains Estriol 1 mg/gm
General Description
Ovestin® contains the natural hormone estriol, which is a weak estrogen. It treats urogenital symptoms without causing adverse changes to the endometrium, which means that it can be used without a progestogen in women with an intact uterus (with estrogen therapies containing estradiol, progestogens are given every month to induce a necessary protective shedding of the endometrium tissue, causing a monthly "withdrawal bleed"). The absence of progestogen-induced withdrawal bleeds with Ovestin makes it highly acceptable to women.
Indications:
- Relief of symptoms caused by atrophy of the lower urogenital tract following the menopause. These include general vaginal/urinary symptoms, recurrent infections of the vagina and lower urinary tract, and mild urinary incontinence.
- Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for treatment of atrophic vaginitis due to estrogen deficiency in peri- and post-menopausal women
- Pre-surgery therapy for vaginal operations and during subsequent convalescence
Contraindications:
- Known or suspected breast cancer
- Known or suspected estrogen-dependent malignant tumors
- Undiagnosed genital bleeding
- Untreated endometrial hyperplasia
- Previous idiopathic or current venous thromboembolism
- Active or recent arterial thromboembolic disease
Side effect:
- Breast tenderness or pain in the breasts
- Vaginal bleeding or spotting during or on withdrawal of therapy
- Excessive production of cervical mucus
- May cause local irritation or itching at the beginning of treatment
