Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic belonging to the azalide group. The mechanism action of Azithromycin is based upon the suppression of bacterial protein synthesis by means of binding to the ribosomal 50s sub-unit and inhibition of peptide translocation. Azithromycin demonstrated activity in vitro, against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.


What is (Zunami) and what is it used for?

Azithromycin (Zunami) is a macrolide & broad spectrum antibiotics. It a widely prescribed antibiotic which is useful for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections. Therapeutic indications are-

  • Infections of the skin and soft tissues
  • Respiratory Infections
  • Enteric Fever

Uncomplicated UTIs

Before you take (Zunami), Do not take this medicine and tell your doctor if

You should not use Zunami if you are allergic to azithromycin, or if:


you have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by taking Zunami; or

you are allergic to similar drugs such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, or telithromycin.

Take special care while taking (Zunami)

Do not take antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium within 2 hours before or after you take Zunami

How and when to take (Zunami)

Azithromycin should be given as a single daily dose. Duration of the treatment for the different infection diseases is given below-

Children and adolescents with a body weight above 45 kg, adults and the elderly

The total dose is 1500 mg, administered as 500 mg once daily for 3 days. Alternatively, the same total dose (1500 mg) can be administered in a period of 5 days, 500 mg on the first day and 250 mg on day 2 to 5.

Patients with renal impairment

Dose adjustment is not required in patients with mild to moderate renal impairment

Patients with hepatic impairment

Dose adjustment is not required for patients with mild to moderate hepatic dysfunction

Method of administration

The tablets can be taken with or without food.

The tablets should be taken with ½ glass of water.

If you forget to take (Zunami)

Take your missed dose as soon as you remember or, if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip your missed dose altogether

If you stop taking (Zunami)

Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor. You should not stop taking (Zunami) just because you feel better. Patient has to complete full dosage. This is because the problem may come back or get worse again.

Possible side effects

Common Zunami side effects may include:


  • Diarrhea;
  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
  • Headache
